Hormone Replacement Therapy

The nation's largest study involving 16,000 women has come to an abrupt end prior to its intended 2005 finish date when new data showed hormone replacement therapy, the use of estrogen and progestin, increases the risk of breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots. The trial was the first and only large study comparing the effects of hormone replacement and estrogen replacement therapy with placebos in healthy women. The Women's Health Initiative study results were released early because of the impact of the results that could affect the six million American women on hormone replacement therapy. Hormone replacement and estrogen replacement therapy, that uses an estrogen-progestin combination, have been shown to increase women's risk of heart attack by 29%, stroke by 41%, and the chances of breast cancer by 26%.

Selective Serontin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI)

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor's [SSRI's] are prescribed to treat depression. This drug group includes Celexa, Effexor, Lexapro, Luvox, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft. These drugs have been reported to cross the placental barrier in pregnant women and to cause birth defects. The birth defects have been known to cause heart, lung and brain injuries. If the child is exposed during the child's development of the heart, then a particular heart deformation [septal defects] may occur. If the exposure occurs during the third trimester when the lungs are developing, then the lungs may have a particular deformity causing Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn [PPHN].

Both of the injuries to the child can reduce the amount of oxygen needed in the child's developing brain. However, the effects on the brain are typically not noticeable until the child reaches the age of 4 or 5. In December, 2006, the American College of Gynocologists issued a statement that SSRI prescriptions for pregnant women should be avoided if possible.

Tractor Trailers

Tractor trailers are associated with far more serious traffic accidents than cars. They are heavy, hard to stop and are often driven at high speeds. State and federal laws are allowing them to carry more rigs, which cause them to be longer and more difficult to control. If you have been the victim of an accident involving a tractor trailer, you may not have received all the compensation due you for your injuries. Please contact our office for more information.

Vioxx

Vioxx - Vioxx is a drug prescribed primarily for arthritis. It has been associated with an increased risk of kidney damage, heart attack and hemorrhagic stroke. The FDA has recently required additional warnings for use of this medication. For more information, go to: http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/Answers/2002/ANS01145.html.
