Digitek & Digoxin

Digitek (Digoxin) Recalled

Digitek is a trade name for the drug Digoxin. Digoxin is prescribed to treat heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms. Digoxin helps the heart to beat more strongly and efficiently thereby improving the circulation of blood in people with congestive heart failure.

In April of 2008, Actavis Totowa, the manufacturer of the drug, announced that all Digitek tablets distributed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals and sold under the labels "Bertek" or "UDL" are being recalled because they may contain a dangerous double dose of their active ingredient Digoxin.

Double strength tablets pose a risk of digitalis toxicity in patients with renal failure. Digitalis toxicity can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, low blood pressure, cardiac instability, bradycardia and even death. Those Digitek users suffering from renal failure are at risk of digitalis toxicity because they cannot excrete digitalis from their bodies like healthy people.
